 When the previous owner retired in 1990 and moved here, he soon found that there didn’t seem to be anyone in the area doing outdoor landscaping services in Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake, or the surrounding areas. His cottage needed a new look, he needed a new career – Higgins Lake Landscaping was born. With the help of a friend (who would eventually become one of the current owners) a few contacts were made, some training and assistance on a couple of projects and a good dose of encouragement, the community had its first outdoor landscaping contractor. As the small company grew from a husband and wife team to having some summer help, their reputation also began to grow. In 1999 and after five years of summer work, one of those workers, Blake and his father Jim (the friend from 1990) were approached to purchase the company. Seeing it as an opportunity to continue to build on a well established business, the sale was made. Coincidently at the same time, the Ostling’s were approached by a lawn care service company called Green Earth about purchasing their business. Recognizing that the lawn care service business would be a good compliment to outdoor landscaping in Houghton Lake and Higgins Lake, it too was purchased and added to the many services, including snowplowing services, provided by the New Higgins Lake Landscaping LLC.
Working out of the home of one of the partners, the new owners immediately expanded the staff and aggressively went after additional customers and projects. In addition to the lengthy list of loyal lawn care service customers from the former Green Earth, larger contracts were secured and the mowing portion of the new business was off and running from the first summer along with the snowplowing services in the winter. Outdoor landscaping opportunities were plentiful and as they were completed, additional equipment was purchased and the business continued to expand with snowplowing services.
After five years of operation from Jim’s garage, it was time to make a change and consider moving into a new facility. A large piece of commercial property became available and purchased to house the expanding outdoor landscaping and lawn care service enterprise. A modern new building was built on the site and office space constructed. The owners spent the fall and winter of 2005 finishing the facility and hit the ground running in the spring with a full plate of outdoor landscape jobs. We feel that our new building is a valuable asset not only to ourselves but to our loyal customers as well. We now offer snowplowing services in Houghton Lake and other areas. We decided to add our snowplowing services for the 20,000 people who are still in Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake during the winter months. All of our clients in Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake highly recommend our lawn care service, snowplowing services, and outdoor landscaping services.
